A New Success for the Theatre on the International Stage
The creative team of the Kostanay Regional Puppet Theatre took part in the 10th International Festival of Puppet Theatre for Adult Audiences, “Solomennyy zhavoronok” named after V. Volkhоvsky, held from September 17 to 21 in Chelyabinsk, Russian Federation.
The “Solomennyy zhavoronok” Festival enjoys a strong reputation among theatre professionals and is well known beyond Russia. This year, 83 applications were submitted for participation. Following the competitive selection process, 11 productions were included in the festival programme. Being selected for the festival programme is, in itself, recognition of the high artistic level of a production.
The Kostanay Puppet Theatre presented a contemporary interpretation of Nikolai Gogol’s novella Zapiski sumasshedshego, directed by N. Sabashvili. The production was warmly received by audiences and festival guests. Particular recognition was given to Tolendy Algozhin, who played the leading role in the production. The actor delivered an expressive and precise performance, creating a profound and emotionally rich character. At the end of the festival, T. Algozhin won the award for Best Actor. One of the distinctive features of the festival is that the winners are chosen not by a professional jury, but by the festival participants themselves. The fact that it was his fellow festival participants who voted for T. Algozhin makes this victory especially meaningful.
Participation in the international “Solomennyy zhavoronok” Festival gave the theatre’s creative team an opportunity to gain valuable professional experience and explore contemporary trends in the development of puppet theatre.
The team’s next journey is already ahead: participation in the 4th International Puppet Theatre Festival “Almaty Puppet Festival – 2026”, which will be held in Almaty from October 20 to 25.
